An Apology 04:38
Caught up in the same refrain of: meet me in the silence of the morning. See how downcast it makes me, dear, to say with no good reason I would rather stay right here. So sing to the Most High, when you are moved to pray no other way tonight. And sing of this splendid sight, a picture of the Mighty Word whispered in light. Measures try to steal and sell, they’re minding all the science of living holy well. Many roads are true and fair, still, why does this one way seldom lead me over there? Chasing sanctity in a dream, in a chord. Fade into empathy, all the walls into doors.

Faded and out of place this flower on the edge of a changing world that we can hardly name. He said don’t let me fall off the side of this cliff, hold my hand even as the ground gives way below. Caught up in dreaming of times that we may never know. and hoping while sleeping is all that we have left to go on. Didn’t it feel just like the last true love on earth when you held me in your arms against that storm? I said don’t let me fly far away from where I see all the days that stretch ahead like empty roads. And on and on, pretty promises they never were intent on keeping. And crawling on, weary as we’ve been, it seemed a better way than leaving. Waving the flag ahead of this, our one defense; hear the calm in all the chaos overhead. A light across the dark brings the blood back to my heart, every line that you had ready goes unsaid.

Innocent Smith came out of the wind and ever since London's never been quite the same. He shouted out madness, but was it their sadness that kept them from hearing just what he had to say? Because all he had to say were words of harmless alleluias. And he would say he'd find his way if someone left the light on. And he woke up one day and prayed that it wasn't too late to find a way to fall in love all over again. And he put a gun to the head of the world as he said you're more alive when you've been gone a while. And under the bridge he saw the sunrise and he saw through the lies that he'd been fed all his life. And in between sounds of the clock striking five he saw how all the light woke the town down below. And all that he had wondered under names of other alleluias made him see that he was free if someone had left the light on. Found a wise man, thought he'd found the piece of home that he'd been looking for. But it turns out he was wrong; that the best way home is the longest way 'round. Innocent Smith, who'd wandered so far walked into his old room and shook the dust off his shoes. Looked around, sat down and smiled at the sight of the lantern left burning, waiting for his return.

I could stay within this moment for days. Inside its name: A hymn to all the brave. Let me call him Father freely. As nights linger, a girl must believe In anything that’s stronger, Anything other than me. And I remain Somebody’s highest concern. The tide may change, But still the psalm is heard. Delight takes me, turns all inside out. With eyes open, and hardly a sound- Cuz everything is silent, As He was just looking at me. Taken in, they’re so polite, In their shining robes of very pretty lies. And uniforms of strange deceit, And stranger countries they’ve wanted me to see. One day, spells break and walls do come down; Head bowed, hands reach for the rose on the ground – A symbol that it’s alright. And I remain Somebody’s highest concern. The tide may change, But still the psalm is heard.

Sing, my tongue, the ageless story as the cross is lifted high. Tell how Christ, our Savior conquered, when for us he came to die, as a victim in the battle, death’s dominion to belie. To the virgin, for our healing, His own Son the Father sends, From the Father’s love proceeding, Sower, seed and word descends; Wondrous life of word incarnate With his greatest wonder ends! On that paschal evening see him with the chosen twelve recline; to the old law still obedient, in its feast of love divine. Love divine, the new law giving, gives himself as bread and wine, by His word, the word Almighty makes of bread his flesh indeed. Wine becomes his very life blood, faith God’s living word must heed. Come adore this wondrous presence, bow to Christ the source of grace. Here is kept the ancient promise of His earthly dwelling place. Hail the blood which, shed for sinners, did a broken world restore. Hail the sacrament most holy, flesh and blood of Christ adore. Faith alone may safely guide us where the senses cannot lead.

There’s green between the cracks in the broken ground below. I hear the slightest tap on the window of my soul. You set my sorrow to a song You wrote, while a thin light, it follows anywhere I go. There’s no hell that you’ve known that I have not walked through before. There’s no hill that you’ve climbed that I have not died on before. There’s no one on this earth not worth the blood that was outpoured from My side, the same side where mercy’s reign is born, Oh, what more can love do than this? One shining victory in the eyes of this old place is miles from the tree and not sweet beyond the taste. So much straw before Your majesty, and I stole from this glory, yet You gave it back to me. Come through the door that I leave open, made from the same wood that death did die upon. Come to the truth that has been spoken, made from the same Word the sun did rise upon.

End Time 03:04
I’m getting old and the bones are sore, I thought I was getting old when I hit 94. I’ve had a full day once again; oh dear, won’t you just reach for the medicine? I looked at the end time right in the eye but the Lord looked back and said you’re not ready to die. And God I get it though it’s hard to see You’re hard to read- You better hold me close cuz You know how I can be. The losses pile up over all these years; I crawled up near the altar where You caught my tears. The lessons never end, it’s just one of those things: the way the wonder waltzes in and starts to sing. So distant from the fire that once lit up my constellation. change a fiercely independent soul, why don’t You break right through the terms of this agreement that I fashioned for myself? It might be the age when all I would want is a customary seat at a restaurant. But I’m dreaming big with the time that’s left. I promise I’ll be good while You do the rest.

about

Miriam Marston Portland, Oregon

I started composing when I was 10. I called one of my first songs "Nostalgia", although I can't recall what my ten year old self was so nostalgic about. Released my first album in 2000. Things got busy, but I never stopped writing. Even if it meant composing on a mostly-broken piano in the basement of a university that I wasn't even enrolled in. Enjoy all the music and reading! Pax.
